THE MACHINE
What a CNC turning centre does.
A turning centre is a computer-controlled lathe. The part spins in a chuck while cutting tools on a turret shape it, producing round parts such as shafts, flanges, bushes and pins. Models with live tooling can also drill and mill, so a part is finished in one set-up.
Who uses them
Auto components
Shafts, hubs, bushes and valve parts, run in volume.
Precision engineering
Tight-tolerance parts for pumps, valves, hydraulics and aerospace.
Job shops
Mixed batches for many customers, where changeover time matters.
